UPDATE OR REPORT

Congratulations to Armstrong Middle School students, staff, and AVID leader Susan Saviano for being recognized as Plano ISD’s first AVID National Demonstration School (Advancement via Individual Determination). This is a major accomplishment that has been years in the making. For the last two years, Armstrong students and staff have been preparing for the National AVID Representatives to come in and grade our school based on AVID philosophy and strategies for student academic achievement. Currently, Armstrong serves just over 100 students in an AVID elective class. The idea of National Demonstration School means that we will incorporate AVID strategies and tutoring school wide. Last year, our AVID students showed tremendous growth academically. In fact, all (100%) of 7th and 8th grade AVID students passed our state TAKS exam in math. Also, AVID students had a 13% higher passing rate on the science portion of the exam compared to all students not enrolled in the AVID elective class.
