Mad Men: Draper and Co. propel Plano West past Allen, into regional finals

The Plano West baseball team never seems to make it easy.

"Yeah," said Aaron Draper, West senior shortstop, with a smile, "we like to make it interesting."

The Wolves (23-11-1) did so again Saturday afternoon in Game 2 of their regional quarterfinals series against Allen (22-12-2). Less than 24 hours after taking the series opener, 1-0, on the road via a sacrifice fly in the final inning, West returned home and once again relied on a sacrifice fly in the final frame to pick up a 5-4 victory in eight innings and best-of-3 series sweep.

"This team has a lot of heart," said Billy McKinney, West senior outfielder. "We also have a really strong bond, so we will fight no matter what."

That was apparent late in the game as West faced a 4-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh after Allen scored three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.

"We've scrapped the whole year," said Draper, who was also the winning pitcher after throwing 2.1 innings in relief. "So we just had to go back out there and do what we know we can do."

The sting of defeat: Timely hits not there in Wildcats' season-ending loss to Yellowjackets

HIGHLAND PARK -- The Plano Senior baseball team nearly doubled up Rockwall in the hit column, 9-5, during Saturday's series-deciding game in a best-of-3 Region II quarterfinal set.

The Yellowjackets doubled up the Wildcats in the portion of the scoreboard that mattered most though, striking early for a 2-1 victory at Highland Park. The setback ended Plano's season in the third round of the postseason.

"It just didn't happen for us in that second game," said Rick Robertson, Plano head coach. "It's just unfortunate because these guys accomplished a whole lot this year. I'm very proud of them."

The opportunities were there all afternoon for the Wildcats, but those chances went awry more often than not by virtue of stranding 11 runners on base -- five in scoring position -- in the loss.

The Yellowjackets left their share stranded as well, but those came after building a 2-0 lead in the first inning. An RBI single by Carson Childers and a sacrifice fly from Garrett Moon triggered the early damage, as the Wildcats chased that deficit all game long.
