After a considerable democratic process, the mascot has been chosen - we are the McMillen Lions! The community’s choice of "Lion" was the culmination of a three stage balloting marathon in which "lion" and "malamute" ran nip and tuck throughout. The lion image will now be festooned in our regal school colors of navy blue and gold.
In the first stage of the selection process involving text-in voting from anyone with a cell phone, the lion won with malamute placing a close second. All students from Armstrong Middle School, Murphy Middle School and Williams High School were eligible to vote in the second stage. With over 1500 votes cast, Malamutes won the day. True to democratic ideals, a grass roots effort was launched by a few future McMillen students to propose a third ballot - one that would display school colors and potential logo images of the lion and malamute. Students petitioned that such a display would bring clarity to the struggle between lion and malamute. Thus a third ballot was created and the campaign for uncommitted mascot voters achieved a feverish pitch. With over 1600 votes cast, lions won by a narrow margin. Thus the lion prevails both in total votes and by winning two of three balloting events.
Thank you to all who participated with us in the mascot selection process. It was a competitive, completely electronic and highly participative adventure. Long live the McMillen Lions!
