McMillen High School Library Mission Statement
The mission of the McMillen Library (Lion’s Den @ YOUR Library) is to ensure that all of our students are effective users of multiple literacies, including information, digital, visual, textual, and technological.
This mission is accomplished by...
- Supporting the reading needs and interests of our students as it is a lifelong learning skill that is a key indicator of success in school and in life;
- Developing independent learners through inquiry as it provides the framework for learning so students can function effectively in a complex information environment;
- By teaching students to seek diverse perspectives, gather and use information ethically, and use social tools responsibility and safely; and
- Strengthening the use of technology as it is a valuable tool for learning, both in school and in life. (AASL, 2007).

Paws Up For Library Sponsored Activities & Programs
- Students are invited to serve on the Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB). The purpose of TAB is to provide McMillen students with the opportunity to suggest and help plan, organize and publicize programs, services, and materials offered through YOUR Library. TAB members will be in the know as well as be eligible for special privileges in YOUR Library.
- Book clubs will be started depending on students’ interest. Book club meeting possibilities are: before school, during lunch, after school, and virtually. Looking for something to read over the summer? Be sure to visit the TAYSHAS Web site to see the 2011-12 recommended reading list http://www.txla.org/groups/TAYSHAS.
- Chess Club is another option that may be hosted in YOUR Library, depending on interest. Why join a chess club? Playing chess enhances scholastic abilities including test scores. Think of it as "exercise for the mind", a fun way to practice concentration, patience, logic, and mental calculations.
- Students who are interested in writing may want to consider joining the Creative Writing Club. The goal of the writing club is to provide students with the opportunity to voice their opinions while developing reading, writing, creative, and critical thinking skills.
- Other clubs? Dr. Long is always open to sponsoring groups, so stop by YOUR Library if you have a club/group you would like to see sponsored by YOUR Library. (Possible interests: graphic novels, gaming, social media, technology, what can you think of?)
