Algur Hurtle Meadows
MEADOWS ELEMENTARY opened in 1964 on land donated by Dallas oilman and philanthropist Algur Hurtle Meadows, founder of what eventually became General American Oil Company and donor of SMU’s Meadows Museum of Spanish Art. Constructed at a cost of $265,000, the school had additions in 1965 and 1973, and a thorough renovation with additions from 1990 to 1992. Meadows Elementary houses the Head Start program formerly at Douglass (1966), established a bilingual program in 1992, and has excelled in the Olympics of the Mind state competitions. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 1997.
