National Junior Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and service. 8th graders are invited to be candidates for induction in the NJHS during their 8th grade year if they meet certain qualifications.
The qualifications for NJHS include earning a cumulative GPA of at least 3.8 at the end of the 7th grade and receiving positive citizenship marks in the 7th grade. In calculating this GPA, all marks in on-level classes are calculated on a 4.0 scale; all honors classes are calculated on a 4.5 scale. All grades are converted and then averaged for a single GPA. Students need not apply to become candidates in the NJHS. All students who qualify will receive a letter of invitation to candidacy within the first few weeks of school during their 8th grade year.
Candidates are inducted in the NJHS near the end of their 8th grade year. To merit induction, candidates must maintain a GPA of 3.8, continue to earn positive citizenship grades, and perform 12 hours of community service (6 in school and 6 out).
