Language Arts
In 6th Grade students study both English and Reading. Writing, literature, reading, and communication skills are intertwined throughout the course. Students will focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, the process of writing, literary study, language development, and lifetime study skills. In 7th Grade students study language, composition, and literature. Language studies emphasize the conventions of English. Composition includes development of paragraphs and multi-paragraph essays through the writing process as well as instruction in capitalization and punctuation. Literature studies encourage an appreciation of the short story, novel, poetry, and drama. In 8th Grade students study language, composition, and literature. Language emphasizes parts of speech and more complex sentence structures. Composition studies culminate in the writing of multi-paragraph papers. Literature studies are designed to develop appreciation and knowledge of the short story, novel, poetry, and drama.

History
In 6th Grade students study contemporary world cultures including changes in technology, political power, intercultural contact, and social conflict throughout man's history. Elements of geography, sociology, economics, and political science are used to explain and compare cultures from ancient times to the present. 7th Graders study the Geography and History of Texas from discovery and exploration through the twenty-first century. The study of our state provides students with an opportunity to focus on historical facts and concepts as well as promoting an appreciation of our cultural heritage and geographic diversity. In 8th Grade students study US History from pre colonial days through the era of Reconstruction. Students will be introduced to the social, cultural, political, and economic happenings, which shaped early America.

Science
In 6th Grade students study life, earth, and physical science. Laboratory investigation of the science process and techniques will be stressed. 7th Graders study Life Science with an integration of chemistry, physics and earth science. Concepts, which are found in common with other sciences, will emphasized in themes covering topics on environmental interactions, systems and structures, energy, and changes over time. In 8th Grade students study Earth Science with an integration of chemistry, physics, and life science. Concepts, which are found in common with other sciences, will be emphasized in themes covering environmental interactions, systems and structures, energy and changes over time.

Math
The Middle School mathematics program is devoted to developing student knowledge and understanding of math that is rich in connections. It is problem solving based. Connections are made in different areas of mathematics. Connections are also made to other subject areas and to applications in the world outside school. In 6th Grade students study the concepts and skills associated with the understanding of numbers, the place value system, probability, statistics, and 2 dimensional measurements. In 7th Grade students further their studies with numbers, probability, statistics, and 3 dimensional measurements. 8th Grade students take a more in-depth study of the concepts and skills already mastered and expand studies with equations. Honors Algebra is an honors course designed to offer high school level work in the middle school.

Reading
Power Reading:
Word attack, vocabulary, comprehension, strategies, and study skills are taught. Diagnostic testing is used to provide appropriate material for students. Personal reading is part of the course.
Reading:
The course provides opportunities for growth in vocabulary, critical comprehension, and learning strategies. Students will be diagnostically assigned to reading materials and class activities that will facilitate growth in overall reading ability.
Analytical Reading:
This elective course emphasizes reading of both fiction and non-fiction in an integrated approach. Students will pursue themes and topics of individual interest and respond in various written and oral formats.

Physical Education
Physical Fitness Assessment
Physical education classes will allow students to understand and discuss the history of each game or activity. Students are expected to know the rules of the various games and be able to gain skills by active participation in various team and individual sports. Wellness education, lifetime activities and fitness are integrated into the classes.
Coordinated School Health Program
Students will receive instruction in Plano ISD’s Coordinated School Health Program. This program will help to establish health behaviors in students designed to last their lifetime. The curriculum will include lessons in physical fitness, health and wellness, decision-making, self esteem/body image, nutrition, mental health/stress, your body systems, growth and development, diseases and disorders, drugs and alcohol, and personal safety.

Band
Band classes are designed to teach music knowledge and technical skills for middle school band. Band students perform in concerts and public programs during the school year.

Choir classes are designed with an emphasis on performance, development of vocal skills, and music appreciation. Choir students perform concerts at various times in the school year.

Orchestra classes are designed to teach music knowledge and technical skills for middle school orchestra. The orchestra students perform in concerts and public programs during the school year.

Art - 2-D Design:
The class includes all two-dimensional media, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, and collage.
Art - 3-D Sculpture:
Many different types of sculpture such as, paper sculpture, ceramics, mask- making, and wire sculpture are included in this class.

Spanish students focus on the Spanish world, its language, and its people. The emphasis is on oral skills while developing reading and writing skills as well as developing a cultural appreciation.

French students focus on the French world, its language, and its people. The emphasis is on oral skills while developing reading and writing skills as well as developing a cultural appreciation.

Industrial Tech
Students explore the growing world of technology. Students are exposed to such areas as aerodynamics, meteorology, desktop publishing, space/rocketry, radio, TV broadcasting, computer animation, robotics, drafting/architecture, and video production. Students learn to read instructions, maintain inventory, and to work with others to be productive and successful

Skills for Living
The classes are designed to teach essentials of cooking, sewing, problem solving and decision making skills. Students learn skills to help with adolescence and life.

Speech
The courses introduce the elements of speech making with an emphasis on public speaking, oral interpretation and debate as well as self confidence and interpersonal interaction.

Theater
Theater classes provide opportunities for students to study the world of theater arts as well as performance. Students study a variety of areas including: acting, writing, and directing as well as history.
