Course Average – Frequently Asked Questions

1.What is the policy for awarding credit through course averaging? With the exception of high school credit courses taken in middle school, a student may be awarded credit for a full year course by either earning a grade of 70 or above in both semesters or by earning a grade of 70 or above when both semester grades are averaged together.

2.When does course averaging apply?
Averaging of the two semesters may only be applied the first time a student takes each semester of the course.

3.Does course averaging apply to all courses?
No. It will not be applied to credit gained through CBE, Collin College dual-credit courses, correspondence courses, or other non-Plano ISD online courses.

4.Is there an impact on grade points?
No, grade points will be awarded based on semester grades earned. The averaging of the two semesters will apply only to accruing of credit.

5.Where will the course average be posted?
The average of both semesters will be posted on the student Academic Achievement Record (transcript) and the student report card.

6.What credit classes are eligible for course averaging?
The practice of determining credit by averaging the two semesters will be applied to courses students take during the day, night school, Plano ISD eSchool, and summer school.

7.Can course setting be mixed for averaging?
Yes, for example, one semester taken during the school day and one semester taken during summer school.

8.Can averaging be applied outside the academic year?
Yes.

9.Can averaging be applied when semesters are different levels of a course? (For example, the student moves from honors to regular.)
Yes.

10.When does course averaging begin?
Course averaging begins with the 2011-2012 school year and thereafter.

11.If a student comes from another district can they participate in course averaging?
Yes.

12.Can a student use course average on one semester of Pre-calculus and one semester of Math Independent Studies?
No.

13.Can a student use course average on one semester of Algebra II and one semester of Math Independent Studies?
No.

14.When can students earn credit for a course?
Class of 2012, 2013, 2014 – Semester 1, Semester 2, Course Average
Class of 2015 – Semester 1, Semester 2, Course Average, Final Grade/EOC

15.Can a Collin College dual enrollment course be course averaged with a Plano ISD course?
Yes.
